A Heartwarming Journey of Coffee, Culture and Community

This year, we had the pleasure of welcoming our first guests from the Netherlands. They
stayed for three days and two nights in our beautiful Joglo house and enjoyed a variety of
meaningful activities. On the first day, they joined a cooking class and watched a traditional
Kuda Lumping performance. The following day, they went cycling through the karst
landscape, planted coffee trees, and had breakfast in a serene garden setting within the
forest.
We chose to plant coffee trees—among other options like cloves—because coffee is one of
the main agricultural products of Wonoharjo Village. Our Robusta coffee grows well at an
altitude of approximately 650 meters above sea level in Dewa Hill. This hill is part of the
South Serayu Mountains and offers beautiful natural scenery and cool air. From the top,
visitors can enjoy the stunning natural panorama, including the view of the Indian Ocean.
While its flavor may be slightly more intense, the traditional roasting method using a
wood-fired furnace gives it a uniquely rich taste and aroma.
Moreover, coffee trees play an important role in absorbing carbon. For instance, one hectare
of coffee trees can absorb up to 25 tons of carbon annually. With an estimated 124,176,000
coffee trees in the area, the environmental impact is significant. We plant these trees in the
Bukit Dewa area—land managed by the village—so that returning guests can visit and
witness the growth of the trees they helped plant.
This year, we also received a research grant from the District Bappeda to develop
experience-based tourism, with coffee as our initial focus. Over the next year, we will monitor
the growth of the planted coffee trees and document the process on the village website,
which we manage ourselves.
We are truly grateful and honored to host this meaningful journey—sharing the experience of
life in a harmonious and communal village. Most importantly, this program empowers the
local community and ensures that village assets are managed for the benefit of many.
